The following are broad areas of research or QI interest:
Epilepsy Epidemiology:
These may include daabase reviews (SQL skills are a plus), chart reviews or literature reviews.
- Drug resistant epilepsy
- Surgical epilepsy
Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS):
The responsive neurostimulation (RNS) System is a device that continously monitors brain waves for electrical abnormalities indicative of seizures, and "responds" by generating and electrical current to the brain when it detects an abnormality. Research includes various aspects of the device including clinical, neurophysiology, and machine learning.
Machine learning:
Machine learning approaches are being explored or planned in the following areas:
- Video
- Empatica
- Large Language Models (LLMs)
- EEG
- RNS
Requirements:
Students intending to perform research should complete the following:
- BCM NICER: Complete a research request form

- Send Resume/CV
SOAR travel awards:
The SOAR Travel Award provides financial support for medical students presenting research at conferences.
- More information on the SOAR Travel Award
- A completed NICER research authorization form before the project starts and prior to abstract submission is required.
